On the Alterations of the Lysosome in the Hepatocytes in rats with Long-term Administration of DL-Ethionine

Abstract
Since de Duve have isolated the lysosome from rat liver cell by the cell fractionation method (1955), many authors have studied the lysosome in the normal or pathological conditions. There are many reports about. the lysosome, especially changes of number and features of it, when the cytotoxic agents are injected. But, in present, many problems are not resolved about the relationship between function and morphology of the lysosome.
Author observed lysosomal changes in liver parenchymal cells of the rat after in gestion of 0.25%DL-Ethionine added to basal diet for 6 or 9 months, in order to study the details. The results were:
1. Degenerative or necrotic changes in liver cells were rnoted after long-term ingestion of the DLEthionine.
2. The lysosome was markedly increased with cellular destruction and it could be subdivided to four groups, such as storage granule, digestive vacuole, autophagyic vacuole and residual body, according to the morphological ground.
3. It was believed that the lysosome increased in the degenerative or necrotic process of the cells. 4. The appearance of abnormal structures, focal cytoplasmic degradation. are considered to be related to the phenomena named autophagy or autophagocytosis.
